8 ways to improve the prompt for ChatGPT

8_ways_to_improve_the_prompt_for_ChatGPT

  1. Role Setting:

Ask ChatGPT to introduce themselves as a specific professional, character, or member of a profession.

Example: Take on the role of a lawyer (poet, psychologist, critic, physics teacher, popular blogger, programmer). Take on the role of an advertising specialist, product manager, etc.

  1. Instructions:

After assigning the role, give the ChatGPT specific instructions on what is expected of it. Specify the action: write, explain, edit, rewrite, compose, etc.

Example: Create a 10-paragraph outline for a ceremonial event. Write an essay on the topic "How I spent my summer". Explain in simple words what a quantum computer is.

  1. Algorithm:

If the task requires several steps, describe them step-by-step and create an algorithm of actions.

Example: Follow the steps. Step 1: Write 5 reasons why exercising is good for you. Step 2: Write 5 reasons why exercise is harmful. Step 3: Compare the results from steps 1 and 2 and answer the question - should I start exercising?

  1. Writing style, tone:

You can specify the desired style and tone of your ChatGPT response. For example: formal, business, artistic, journalistic. You can also specify the tone: emotional, reserved, ironic, ironic, friendly, critical.

Tip: Take a short text from an author whose style you like, copy it into ChatGPT, and ask them to define a tone. Then use that tone when generating your own texts.

  1. Desired Outcome:

Specify the desired result you want to get from ChatGPT. For example, the answer should contain professional terminology, statistics, quotes, metaphors, specific sources, real examples, keywords, arguments. You can also specify the desired length of your response: a 5 paragraph text with no more/less than 1000 words in each. While ChatGPT doesn't count words perfectly, it approximates your requirements. Specifying what should not be included in the response also works well. This is a specific instruction that ChatGPT can easily understand.

Example: The answer should not contain explanations or assumptions, just the bare facts.

  1. The format or structure of the content:

Specify the desired format or structure of the content.

Example: letter, lesson plan, list of questions with answer choices, dialog, table, structured list, article with markdown formatting.

  1. Context:

Clarify the purpose of the text and identify the target audience for the response.

Example: A young family with children has moved to a new city and is looking for a place to live. Take on the role of an advertising specialist. Create 3 ads that offer the most cost-effective housing solutions for this young family. The ads should include the name of the real estate agency - XYZ Realty and the name of the owner of the agency - John Smith.

Another example with context and creativity: Write a script for a short video about unconventional ways of cooking kebab. The main character is a plumber who finds himself on a desert island. Use Campbell's monomyth structure with a surprise ending.

  1. Translation of the request/response into English:

For many simple tasks, it is sufficient to communicate in Russian. However, the intellectual level of ChatGPT is even higher when the communication is in English, and the acceptable request size is approximately twice as large.

If you speak English, communicate with the chatbot in English. If your English level is not so high, write requests to ChatGPT in Russian, ask it to translate your request into English, and then provide the chatbot with the English request. You can translate the response back into Russian using the same ChatGPT. It is better to do the translation in a separate dialog, without mixing it with the substantive communication.
